Is the Honeymoon Over for the Roberts Court?

A Supreme Court term that began with hopes for a new era of consensus dissolved in its final weeks into a blizzard of quarrelsome writing that clarified little and robbed some decisions of their precedential force. The messy finale may be explained in part by the increased importance of Justice Anthony Kennedy as the Court's swing vote. And some say the disarray may just be a preview of next term, when the Court will face even thornier cases on race-conscious public school policies and abortion.

Computer Glitch Blamed for 'Secret Dockets'

Top Florida court officials in Broward and Palm Beach counties, which came under public criticism this spring for maintaining "secret dockets," now say that computer problems were responsible for the controversial removal of many civil court cases from the public record. Both counties are moving forward to release information from these super-sealed files to the public. The decisions for each jurisdiction will be made on a case by case basis and no time frame has been given.
 
   
 
Former Judge Convicted of Indecent Exposure

A jury has convicted former Oklahoma judge Donald Thompson on all four counts of indecent exposure, recommending one year in prison and a $10,000 fine on each count for the 59-year-old, whose long career couldn't survive allegations that he used a sexual device called a "penis pump" while presiding over trials. The conviction will require Thompson to register as a sex offender and could jeopardize his $7,489.91-a-month pension from the state. Thompson maintained his innocence.
